Blog Reflection

Through out the course of this semester I have tried to be diligent and write on my blog at least once a week but sometimes that didn’t happen. I really didn’t get much use out of this blog except for something I had to try to update once a week. I suppose if more people may have read it then I could have gotten more feedback but that didn’t happen. I felt that if I had a problem with my class I received better information by going to one of the administrators at my school or to a teacher who has been teaching for multiple years to seek advice rather than write about it. Maybe I didn’t completely understand what the blog was meant for but it was just hard for me to put a lot of time that I didn’t have into something that I didn’t get anything out of. Was it supposed to be something where I can keep a diary of my class and get out some of my emotions? If that’s the case well then I’m just not the type of person who likes to spill my guts to a bunch of other people.
However, I do believe a blog would be helpful it if was set up for my class or my athletic team. If I set up for students and parents and posted dates of assignments and tests along with reminders then that could be very useful. Also with athletics I could put up the weekly schedule along with other useful information. One example for that is when we went to Shiloh Christian High School in the playoffs this year. Shiloh Christian is in Springdale Arkansas which is a nice long trip from McGehee. A lot of parents kept calling up to the school wanting to know the schedule for the trip. If our head coach had a blog he could have posting that on his blog so the parents could just go on there and print it out. Also, another idea I had was for summer workouts where I could post everything about the workouts that we will be doing so that parents can see exactly what their kids will be doing. Kids also wouldn’t have an excuse to miss anything because I would have it posted on my blog were it was available for everyone to see. And then kids could trick their parents into thinking they didn’t have anything when they actually did.
I believe that a blog done in the right context would be very useful and helpful to any teacher. Even though I don’t think I got a lot out of this blog I do believe it gave me some ideas for a future blog. So maybe in the end the blog turned out to be useful.

Semester almost over

Well the semester is almost over both my school work and my teaching and I can honestly say im ready for a break from the school work. Im also ready to be done with this bloq I really don't see the good in it to be honest. A lot of the stuff we do in the MAT is good but this isn't one of them. Yesterday was a bad day for me in class. All the work that I had seemed to be doing went out the window yesterday it seems my kids forgot all my rules and how to act.

School Pics

This is the score after our game with Warren High School. It had been about ten years since we beat them.

This is our summer football camp that we put on for the youths of McGehee. The guys in the white jerseys are our senior 3 year football players.

Killer Angles Book review

Opinion of book: 5 out of 5 stars.

The Killer Angels is a book about the Battle of Gettysburg during the civil war. It is a great story about what both sides went threw during the civil war. Are the confederate troops able to defeat the union troops and end the war once for all? This book can be used for both English and History and is a must read. It is very historical correct but also is very interesting to read. The characters are described very in depth and you are able to get a good grasp on what they are thinking. You almost get to feel what it was like to be a solieder in the Civil War.

Thanksgiving

Well it is almost Thanksgiving and boy am I glad for it because I am in need of a break. Football is now over after our beat down at the hands of Shiloh Christian last week. Being able to recruit sure is nice I can tell you that. However, now that football is over my work week has just been cut in half. No more working till 8 or 9 at night and then going home and doing school work now I just have to do school work. I also coach track but thats not untill after Christmas break and its not nearly the hours that football is.

Book Review- "" The Last Lecture"

" The Last Lecture" by Randy Pausch is a very inspiring book. I give it 5 stars. This book is about Randy Pausch who is a professon at Carnige Mellon University and he founds out that he has termonial cancer. He is asked to give a last lecture that most universities do but for him its different because it will actually be his last lecture.
The main goals of the books is for Randy Pausch to leave his final thoughts on his life and what he was able to accompolish. He also hopes that it can be used as a road map for his 3 small children who will probably have no recollection of him. He also talks about in the book a good bit about how he and his wife are spending their final months together and what she will do when he's gone. This is a very emotional book that goes in depth with a man who is living his last days. I believe that it is a must read.

Week 11

Man if feels awesome to be playing football in week 11 and for those of you who don't understand what that means it means we made the playoffs. This is McGehee's first home playoff game in ten years. Its pretty awesome to see all the hard work payoff. A lot of people complain about how much work teaching is and it is a lot of work but people have no idea about work until they coach. Today is Sunday and I went into work at 2pm and left at 11pm. But there isn't anything in the world that I would rather be doing.

New Week

Well I took my first day off from school this last monday. I woke up about 4 am with a really bad headache and it seems like it hasn't went away yet. My sub didn't leave me any info on my classes but I know two of my desks were torn up when I got back. So id imagaine she had a pretty rough time or just let them do whatever they wanted. Also, yesterday was my first parent teacher conference I had 16 parents out of about 90 kids show up. It was actually a little more than I expected would show up. I didn't have a lot of great reports to give either. My students just don't want to do their notebook. But hoping now that some of my parents see how easy it is they will step in and make sure it gets done.

New Week

Well its the beginning of a new week and im excited about it. The football team picked up a big win friday night and it puts us at 3-1 in conference play so we still control our own destiny for the most part. And in football thats really all you can ask for. The nine weeks ended friday and the new nine weeks starts wednesday so that means my first parent teacher conference is right around the corner. It make me kinda nervous because I do have a fair amount of students flunking my class but its mainly because they dont turn in assignments so they get zero's. I kept telling them they have something due and they don't turn it in. I don't know what else to do.

Senior Skip day

Doesn't everyone love senior skip day? Im kinda new to this since we didn't do this in high school but literally no seniors showed up yesterday. However, I have very few seniors in class so it didn't really effect me untill football practice when half of our senior football players didn't show up for practice. It really bothers me when my students don't put in a quarter of the effort that I do. In the classroom I make study guides and give a note outline and I find them on the floor or stuck in a book all the time and that tends to bother me a lot. It really bothers me when it is carried over to football or any other extra activity because they don't have to be there if they don't want to. In my History classes most of my students don't like History and don't care about it so I can understand to a certain extent when they leave stuff carlessly laying around. I just need to do a better job of getting them involved with what I am teacing. But with football there should be no me trying to get them involved or into it. We have a huge game this week and they think they can just take off a day its ridiculous. And the sad thing is if they treat the athletics like that then how do they treat their school work?

Beginning of Another week

Well its tuesday night so its two days down and three to go lol. The week has started out pretty good im starting to get control of my huge class. I know this sounds bad because we've been in school so long but its just hard. I did have my third test in American History and my classes showed a subsantial improvment. However, I still believe that they could do better. I still can't get them to take notes although I am trying a new system that is very easy and it should get them to follow along better and interact.

First Loss

Well tonight my football team had our first loss. We dropped to 2-1 which by no means is a bad start it just really bothers me to see us lose to a team that we should have beat. However, that is coaching life for you. On a better not I recorded a class session today for the intersnship portion of the MAT program that I am in. I was really nervous but i believe that my own personal viewing of the tape along with the feedback that I will get will be very helpful to me during the rest of my teaching career.

First Weeks of School

The first couple weeks have been pretty hectic for me. I can honestly say that I have been more than just a little busy. I teach 5 classes a day. I teach 3 American History classes and 2 World History classes. I also have duty in the morning and a lunch duty. It is very hard to balance coaching and teaching along with graduate school work so I can already tell that this is going to be a very busy year. However, im looking forward to having a great year in the classroom and as well on the football field. Football is starting out very well both the Junior High and Senior High teams are 1-0. The Junior High plays Dumas this week and the Senior High has a bye week since Marvell cancelled on us. Im really enjoying coaching thought. Its not the same as playing but its as close as im going to get I imagine. Im also really enjoying the classroom. I love history so its great to be able to share 2 loves (football being the other) to younger kids. I still have a lot of room to improve on in the classroom but im doing the best that I can.
